No rule to make target `install'

Hi folks,

Tried to install "blfs-bootscripts-6.1.tar.bz2" on BLFS 6.1 according to;
7.2. LFS-Bootscripts-3.2.1
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/...otscripts.html

Steps performed as follows;

root@localhost:/sources# tar jxf blfs-bootscripts-6.1.tar.bz2
root@localhost:/sources# cd blfs-bootscripts-6.1
root@localhost:/sources/blfs-bootscripts-6.1# make install
Code:
make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.
root@localhost:/sources/blfs-bootscripts-6.1# ls
Code:
ChangeLog LICENSE MAINTAINERS Makefile README blfs lfs-bootscripts.version
What is "No rule to make targe" which has been come across occasionally.

Please advise how to fix the problem.

TIA

B.R.

Well, for the blfs-bootscripts, you can't (and don't want to) install them all at once. You just install them as you need them.

The reason there is no target install is because of the way make works. The Makefile specifies rules that you can choose from, install usually being one of them. But there is no rule for install defined. There are rules such as install-alsa defined, which you'll use in the ALSA chapter.

Hi kjordan,

I did not really want to install the package. I was going through the BLFS 6.1 book to check what have been left out. Because for the remaining part to install operation packages I'm prepared to do in on BLFS 6.1 not going back to chroot env anymore.

On "Random Number Generation"
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs...fs/random.html

I can't proceed on "make install-random" also "make: *** No rule to make target `install'". It mentioned "blfs_bootscript' there. I thought insalling the same may solve the problem. That is the story.

Last time I failed to install "lesstif' on BLSF 6.1. I'll try to install it on chroot environment later to see what will happen.

To install the random bootscript:

tar xvjf blfs-bootscripts-6.1.tar.bz2
cd blfs-bootscripts-6.1
make install-random

Just to clarify abit.... there are many different bootscripts in that package and you only want to install the one you actually need. That is why there is no "make install", but there is "make install-service-dhclient" and "make install-random" for example.
