have you built an LFS system yet??
AFTER you build, then it's easier to decide what package manager you may want..........the LFS hints page has a hint pertaining to package managers ..........

Ofcourse it is check out the hints http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/read.html
You can also create your own livecd.
If you have build the LFS base system go further with BLFS http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/ , and install what you want.
With BLFS you don't have to follow the book like LFS.

Anaconda's source and information on using it can be obtained here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Anaconda
(I think I might try doing this with my distro too.)
Note: the source comes in rpms unless you do cvs. I used Midnight Commander to copy the tar.bz2 out of it.
