make INSTALL_HDR_PATH=dest headers_install gives 'gcc: error trying to exec' in section 6.7

I am in section 6.7 (installation of Linux API headers) of LFS version 8.2

When I run
Code:
make INSTALL_HDR_PATH=dest headers_install
I get
Code:
CHK include/generated/uapi/linux/version.h
HOSTCC scripts/basic/fixdep
gcc: error trying to exec '/tools/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/7.3.0/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/as': execv: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [scripts/Makefile.host:90: scripts/basic/fixdep] Error 1
make: *** [Makefile:460: scripts_basic] Error 2
what have I done wrong?

same problem -fixed

I found the problem and it was my mistake.

The problem seems to be, that for whatever reason the /mnt/lfs/tools directory had disappeared.
I really cannot explain why. I tar-gz-ed it and then it was gone.

Interestingly when I tried extracting the files again into /mnt/lfs again, it would extract without problems, the files just wouldn't show. I solved it by extracting into a different directory and moving the tools into the correct dir.

Of course now everything works fine.

Sorry to have revived that old thread.
