Logging compilation

Hi,
I'm not new to Linux. I still consider myself new to LFS though, as I've only just created my second bootable system.

Where I have issues is - well I just don't know. Compilation errors happen, I can't explain them. The books all say to log the output of make and make install, but I haven't found anywhere that says how.

What I want to do:
Log the output of all the packages and their test-suites so I can discuss any errors that pop up in detail instead of a vague "It didn't work".

I'm currently trying to compile x.org and guess what. "It didn't work". I know I need more than this to find out why.

Please help

How about:

Code:
command 2>&1 | tee name-of-log-file
This prints everything to the console and a log file of your choice.
