LFS with shell

I started with LFS many years ago and now I can see that after booting a minimal system it starts with the shell. How do they make it possible?
I remember that we needed to specify init=/bin/bash to start with the shell.

Surely with a minimal system no X no multi user the default is to give just a login prompt to a shell?
