LFS on Remote Computer?

Hello all... I have a quick question.

Im new to linux, but I like to jump right into the deep end before I tread water for to long

I have an old computer that is functional. I would like to experiment with LFS/BLFS on that computer. I have my computer that I use for everyday work with Mandrake 10 already on it. Can I somehow remotely install LFS onto the old computer by mounting it or something like that? Im thinking this is not possible, but I would like the input from the gurus here. Thanks!

Will

I beleive it should be possible if you were to do it over ssh. But that would only work if you already had another distro installed on that machine. That is the only way I can think of doing it remotely.

When I built my LFS, I did all of mine remotely thru ssh. But yeah, in order to build any LFS requires a preinstallation of Linux on the same machine, etc.

Thats what I was thinking...

Does anyone have a suggestion on what OS to use in a situation like mine? Could I use a live cd to create LFS?

I'm sure it would be possible with a live cd, but it would be much easier to just install a distro. Here is the best thing to do:

Partition your drive as you want the drive to be set-up once your LFS is finished. Then, go ahed and install your host distro to the partition that you want to use as /home. Once you are done with the host distro, simply format the drive.

Also, I reccomend using slackware as a host distro.

you can download linuxfromscratch live cds from several different locations from the linuxfromscratch website to use for your host distro but will take much longer due to cd access times
