LFS from A cd Linux distro

Can I use a linux distro from a cd to install LFS

I was thinking of Knoppix or core.

My computer is a Pentium 133 with 64 mags of ram

Not sure what you're asking.

Are you wanting to use packages on another distro's CD to work through your LFS project?

The FAQ has this:

"If this is your first time building LFS, using a version not in the book or varying from the book in any way is not a good idea. The IRC channel regulars have a saying, "FBBG". As rms, the resident bot, is quick to say, this means, "Follow Book, Book Good." They and the people on the lists have helped many an unhappy newbie who deviated from the book during that first build.

Once you've built a system "by the book", you have a stable knowledge base from which to experiment to your heart's content (or pain, as is often the case.) "

Yes, you absolutely can. I have built an LFS system using Knoppix twice. It's a "clean" way of doing things since you don't need a starting distribution on your hard drives to start with.

I would suggest building the LFS system all in one go if you do it that way though. Because every time you reboot, you'll have to set up environment variables and chroot repeatedly. It can be a headache.

Thanks, Dark_Helmet

I've been wondering about that for a while now. It's good to know I may be able to use my Knoppix CD to build LFS.

Awesome! Woohoo!

So, was I right in my interrogative speculation ( ) that you can use packages from a knoppix CD to build an LFS system, rather than downloading them separately?

And I assume that knoppix is a distro that runs from CD.

Thanks...

I'm not sure if I completely understand what you say when referring to packages on a CD rather than downloading them.

Yeah, knoppix is a CD-only distribution of Linux. It won't touch your hard drive, and boots into KDE. So I open up a command-line, fdisk the drive, make my filesystems, and then use wget to download the LFS packages to the hard drive.

Knoppix takes the place of Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE, or whatever other distribution someone would normally have on their hard drive. Instead of the distribution residing on the hard drive, it's located on CD (including gcc, glibc, etc.). That way, you can use your entire hard drive for LFS instead of sharing space with a distribution you plan to get rid of later.

Oh. Ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Now I understand the original question.

Regards...
