Hi (again :) ),

A word of advise: The BLFS isn't set up the same as the LFS book. The LFS book is straight-forward: You start at page one and work all the way to the end. BLFS doesn't work that way!

You need to do chapters 1, 2 and 3 in the order they are presented. After that you decide what you want/need to install. Dependencies are mentioned when needed (you do need to install the required and Recommended dependencies).

Also: Install GMP and Lynx after you've done the first three chapters, that way you have a mouse and a (text)browser, which makes your building life a lot easier.

Happy building!

From now on you should use LFS and not the host/chrooted environment method to build stuff.

Hope this helps.

Seriously?

- Use vi and start typing,
- Install GPM + Lynx and start copy/pasting,
- Use chrooted environment, start copy/pasting.

devilboy09 11-19-2011 02:46 PM

tanx
Code:

Use chrooted environment, start copy/pasting.
can i do the whole blfs with this approach?

spiky0011 11-19-2011 03:18 PM

I asked the same Question druuna sugested building from the lfs system is best

spiky0011 11-19-2011 03:26 PM

I asked the same Question drunna advised it was best to build from lfs system

devilboy09 11-20-2011 02:36 AM

Code:

I asked the same Question drunna advised it was best to build from lfs system
but it's very time consuming process to type each and every command!!!

spiky0011 11-20-2011 03:14 AM

I know did you install gpm and the web browser yet links. Can you use vim?

devilboy09 11-20-2011 03:18 AM

i didn't install gpm and Lynx.frankly, i don't think that could help me.because i'm using vmware and it needs vmware tools to work properly.so i gave up on that

druuna 11-20-2011 03:18 AM

Hi,

Did you read post #3???

I've told you this twice already in this thread, but just to make sure:

Yes, it is time consuming, even if you copy and paste.

druuna 11-20-2011 03:26 AM

Hi,

Have a look here why you should use LFS and not the host+chrooted environment: building BLFS

Are you sure about that, 'cause I seriously doubt that.

devilboy09 11-20-2011 03:33 AM

thank you for your posts drunna.you should forgive me about my questions because i came this far and i want to be %100 sure.

i meant from my host os that is windows seven, vmware tools should be installed.

If that's a problem, maybe LFS/BLFS isn't for you. Choosing to use something like LFS or Slackware or Gentoo is going to require more of your time to maintain the system. You should go into it with eyes wide open.

That said, I'll second all of druuna's advice. Also, if you built LFS in a virtual machine, you don't even need to install GPM and links on LFS as you can use your host machine's browser.

Too my knowledge the vmware tools make life a bit easier/smoother when interacting between (vmware)host and (vmware)client. The vmware tools aren't needed on LFS (I even doubt if you could install them at this stage).

I've regularly installed LFS using a virtual machine and I never install/need the vmtools (depending on what I want to do I do install them when (B)LFS is installed).

Hope this helps.
