ld reports "no input file" at first sanity check (chapter 5.7)

im trying to compile the dummy main(){} program, but it looks like something is amiss with ld:

(path to ld, the one living in /tools...): no input files
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

any idea what might have gone wrong ?
