kernel version?

Chapter 5.2 Host system requirements states that my host system must comprise of Linux kernel 2.6.2 or later compiled with gcc 3.0 or higher.

running a cat /proc/version in my shell revealed "kernel version 2.4.29 compiled with gcc 3.3.4" meaning, according to the lfs manual that, I have the wrong kernel version compiled with the right gcc!

Heres the problem. It states that if the kernel was compiled with something othe than gcc 3.0 that a new kernel must be compiled and the system booted into that kernel for building. Then it refers me to chapter 8 for instructions on doing this.

*Chapter 8 shows you how to build the kernel and configure the bootloader for the lfs system...NOT MY HOST SYSTEM.

*How can I compile a new kernel and bootloader for the lfs system and boot into the lfs system to build the lfs system when the lfs system doesnt even exist yet!!!!!?????

*Is all this just bogus misinfo and cant I just continue on with my work.........working off of my host system?

*If not, then how do I compile a new kernel for my host system???

i had the same problem, what i did is search the forums for "kernel compile" and found a tutorial on how to do it, it was pretty easy just folow the instructions, after you compile the kernel you can start on the lfs book.
