KDE-3.3 fails to start --- PLEASE HELP!!

Hi!

I spend the last two days, struggeling to get my Kde-3.3 to work and I don't think I'll come across a solution on my own anytime soon..

I set up a system according to the LFS and BLFS-books, using

Linux-2.6.8.1, Xorg-6.7.0, Qt-3.3.3, KDE-3.3.0

So far, everything is working fine.. X launches without errors.

Trouble starts as soon as startkde is called from within .xinitrc:

*)
All I see is a gray screen (not the standard x-screen but a solic gray one) and a mouse-cursor in its center.
I can move the mouse but there is no reaction to mousebuttons or keyboard input.
The SplashScreen does not appear!

*)
When I switch back to console, I read endless amouts of messages:
Code:

startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: Inactive pixmap: /opt/kde-3.3.0/[...]/splash_inactive_bar.png
ksplash: Active pixmap: /opt/kde-3.3.0/[...]/splash_active_bar.png

[and from now on, there are KCrashes for kcminit, kdesktop, klipper, etc..]

What I found strange was that right in the beginning, KSplash crashed without giving a reason

*)
So I started X with twm and xterm and launched KSplash:

Code:

kio (KTrader): KServiceTypeProfile::offers( KSplash/plugin, )
kio (KSycoca): Trying to open ksycoca from /var/[...]/sycoca
kio (KTrader): Returning 3 offers
ksplash: Inactive pixmap: /opt/kde-3.3.0/[...]/splash_inactive_bar.png
ksplash: Active pixmap: /opt/kde-3.3.0/[...]/splash_active_bar.png
KCrash: crashing... crashRecursionCounter = 2
KCrash: Application Name = ksplash path=<unknown> pid=20821

adding --nocrashhandler and --nofork will leave ksplash hung at:
Code:

DCOP: unregister 'ksplash'
Segmentation fault

Do you have any Ideas what is going wrong here?
Do you have any experiences with KDE-3.3.0 and Qt-3.3.3
What else could I try to get closer to the error??

THANX!!! ;)

320mb: in that thread, somebody had just forgotten, to edit his .xinitrc so that it would start startkde instead of twm. KDE always worked fine for him.

For me, it doesn't. No matte what way I try to launch KDE or any KDE app, it will crash immediately, producing more or the the errors above.

I assume you're using the 6-TEST package. If you are make sure you are using the SVN version of BLFS, not the regular BLFS version as its not compatable with 6-TEST.

I'm not sure which versions you mean.

I used the svn-2004100x - version of the blfs book and downloaded the packages mentioned in the according chapters:

http://mirrors.isc.org/pub/kde/stabl...-3.3.0.tar.bz2 (kdelibs, arts from the same source)
http://sunsite.rediris.es/mirror/Qt/...-3.3.3.tar.bz2

Anything wrong with that?

I'm rebuildingKDE for the third time now..

When compiling arts-1.3.0, make check produces lots of errors like this one:

Code:

In file included from ../mcop/core.h:6,
from x11commtest.cc:28:

../mcop/common.h: In function 'void Arts::writeObject(Arts::Buffer&, T*)':
../mcop/common.h:87: error: invalid use of undefined type 'struct Arts::ObjectReference'
../mcop/dispatcher.h:48: error: forward declaration of 'struct Arts::ObjectReference'

[...]

Is this an error in arts/mcop or in the testsuites??
