I have tried to install LFS many times, starting with the earliest versions. I did, in earlier times complete the first pass of all programmes successfully, but I have never completed the whole installation.

In the more recent versions of LFS, I have never even successfully completed the first pass; without errors that is.

I am now attempting to install version 6.4, and almost immediately I run into problems.

Having mounted the ext3 filesystem, I run:

debugfs -R feature /dev/sda3

and get the additional feature ext_attr. I then run:

cd /tmp
tar -xzvf /path/to/sources/e2fsprogs-1.41.3.tar.gz
cd e2fsprogs-1.41.3
mkdir -v build
cd build
../configure
make #note that we intentionally don't 'make install' here!
./misc/mke2fs -jv /dev/<xxx>
cd /tmp
rm -rfv e2fsprogs-1.41.3

but I still get ext_attr.

Then later, when I run:

Su – lfs

I get the error:

/dev/tty1: Operation not permitted.

From this point on nothing agrees with the book on what should happen.

Please can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

I can't help more than to say that using the Live CD that they provide the .iso for, I didn't complete it but it was not due to errors or anything like that. I just didn't finish it. I would imagine it has something to do with the host system ... I have the 6.4 Live CD.
