Info on building new LFS with old tools

Basically what it says, can I use a toolchain from say lfs7.7 to build a new lfs7.8 system, I always keep the toolchain ( tarred up ), so just wondering if I need to build a new one or not.

You should be okay. In the past, I used toolchain from 3 versions ago to build current version and it worked. Only time where it wouldn't work is when new packages were added (xz, util-linux) or existing ones modified to install more (gettext).

Nice to know I may give it whirl and see what happens, not sure I want to do a full upgrade to 7.8 just yet, I was debating whether to skip a version this time.

Well thought I would give it a go building 7.8 with 7.7 tools, ran fine until e2fsprogs when I kept getting undefined symbol errors from glibc, checked the 7.8 tool-chain and found quite a few config differences from 7.7 ( I use scripts to build everything ), so after correcting a number of configs in the build script built the 7.8 tool-chain and everything seems to be OK now, so in conclusion I guess you can't reliably build a new system with old tools.
