There's something wrong in one of these files:
/etc/profile
/etc/bashrc
~/.bash_profile
~/.bashrc

The error is telling you that bash could not interpret the commands in one of those files because of a syntax error. So, if you've been adding commands to any of those files, double-check them. Make sure the test conditions in the if statements are good, make sure the shell variables have '$' in front of them when they're referenced, etc, etc.

If you're using the versions in the BLFS book, make sure you typed them up exactly the same, including spaces.

If you can't find the problem, then you can go ahead and post the contents of those files in a response, and we'll figure it out.

Ok, do you have a computer that has internet access and a CD burner?

If so, try to download a live-linux CD from www.linuxiso.org (knoppix prefferably). If you're on dialup, then it will take you a LONG time to get it; it might be easier for me to burn and mail you a copy...

The CD will boot and run a linux system without doing anything to your hard drive. That will give you the opportunity to open up files to correct possible problems. Besides, it's a good idea to have a rescue disk anyway. So go grab it if you can, and I am quite serious about mailing it to you if necessary (everybody should have a copy of Knoppix)

But while you're doing that, you didn't give me anymore clues. Was the computer working to start with? I mean, did it have these problems the very first time you booted after finishing the LFS install?

If yes: did you modify any of the files I mentioned earlier?

If no: did you follow the book exactly, or did you deviate & what packages did you deviate from?

another question...

[shad@** psybnc]$ ./psybnc
Configuration File (null) not found, aborting
Run 'make menuconfig' for creating a configuration or create the file manually.
[shad@** psybnc]$

can this be due to the same problem ?

Is this a Linux From Scratch system? Did you go to www.linuxfromscratch.org and follow their book?

From what you say, I'd have to guess the answer to those questions is "no" because you're "connecting remotely." An LFS system does not support connecting remotely after you finish it.

I do not know anything about putty, so I can't help you there. From what you've told me, all I can say is that there is a problem in one of the four files I originally mentioned. There could be any number of problems within those files, and since you can't post their contents, my hands are tied. I can't help fix the problem if I don't know what it is.

Don't worry about it. I like to help people when I can, but sometimes that means I have to point you to another forum because there aren't a lot of people who browse this one (because of its specific focus). If you look at the number of posts in this forum versus those in others, you'll see what I mean.

I really wish I could help you out more, but all I can suggest is to post in the General or Newbie forum. A lot more people will see it and, undoubtedly, someone with more knowledge than me will respond to it...

Good Luck!
