hardened mini linux distribution

hi there !

i am a student from india, i dont know if u can help me or not, but i need one help for my college graduation project.
Well let me give u some background information.
Most of my classmates are doing windows platform projects, like ASP.net and all. Even my teachers are supportive of those projects, and prefer me joining ..something similar.

But for some reason, i dont want to share any of my project DNA with microsoft, and would like to create, an automomous project based on linux

here's what i have decided,

i have decided to develop a linux based software appliance solution.
it will be something a software application (php/MySQL based)...which will be an out of the box solution.
it will be a software appliance, with the embedded application, on a custom hardened linux distribution
i would like my distribution to only have the necessary components like Apache/MysQL /firewall and the other necessary components
i would also line to write apache certificates for secure (https access)
also i would like to implement port control and and disable console access for security...

so essentially my software appliance will be a secure application server with features like databack up and hardened security..

i would like to know if you can help me inthis ambitious project...

regards
