I am just starting out wiht the LFS and downloaded half the packages. can you put a GUI such as KDE or Gnome on there? and how would you do it? thanks

Looks like you don't understand the idea of LFS.
LFS allows you to setup 'minimum' Linux system (but if it is a real minimum can be a matter of discussion).
Next you install what you need - for this is BLFS.
In case of BLFS you are choosing what you want (there is no 'steps' order which need to be keep on). Of course sometimes you need to install 'something else' before chosen packet because of dependencies.

think of it this way.
lfs (stage 1) minimal system
blfs (stage 2) all the other optional package (gui)
It's the same distro, just a different 'stage'.

Sure just make sure cdrecord is installed first.

Oh I thought you meant an iso as a data cd.
