getting started with LFS

I want to do a LFS system - how do I get started??....I mean, how do I create a partition on my new LFS system??...when I read the book....that is the very first thing you do....do you do a stripped down install of a distro in order to do this? I don't get the concept of "from scratch" when I don't even know how you "partition" your hard drive - b/c you would have to install a partioning software first right! where does this partitioning and formatting program come from...do you see what I mean?

Thanks.

Adrian

My guess would be some sort of LiveCD, but I've never done LFS.

Just install the developement tools of your distro and read the LFS book.

Ok...so if I want to use Slackware as my distro...just install the developement tools? ok...

Correct. You have to install the GCC Gnu Make etc..

My suggestion would be read the book. Then ask questions based upon what you've read.

thanks. That makes things a little clearer.

Use the LiveCD

My recommendation is to use the LiveCD, even if you have another distro already installed.

The LiveCD guarentees an uncontaminated build, avoiding any issues introduced by the host system, and has all the required files included - no more hunting for the version as stated in the book.

It includes X running XFCE, IRC clients, Firefox and a copy of the book, which should be everything you need to get LFS compiled and installed without trouble.

I recommend the LiveCD for your 'first' LFS, and use your own discretion afterwards if you build again, as you'll know how things are 'supposed' to go.
