LFS you need to install everything by hand, gentoo uses portage so you just need to type emerge <pkgname> to install something and portage installs all the deps.

LFS = use your brains and common sense...........LOL
with LFS you actually get your hands dirty and get under the hood of your
box............you learn more by building a LFS system............
Thanks. I am not a hardcore IT person. In regards to getting under the hood I am like a BABY. I will be doing this just as a hobby. If go too fast I am afraid I may make too many errors and be discouraged. So, first doing Gentoo Stage installs and then the LFS seems the best way to go for me.
yes portage is a package (or source ebuild) handler and is fantastic, there is nothing stopping an LFS builder using in their box of course, and as for using your brain, I agree it is tougher building LFS, but there are plenty of sources to let you know all the deps you require when installing packages.

=)
I read the manual online. Don't have a printer and printing the manual is a problem. I will post/share here whenever I try it.
I also came across VidaLinux. It is a full linux distro based on Gentoo. One can install this and then learn Gentoo at their pace. Since, Gentoo is one of the top distros there seems to be a good chance it will go the Debian way with several other side wrap distros.
