gcc testsuite hangs
Hi there, after installing the final version of GCC-4.4.1 following CLFS SVN-20091010-x86_64-Multilib I run the testsuite for gcc with make -k check and it hangs.
It also kills any other program
running in the host (like a browser with the book for example, and the
whole desktop) so I think this might be a problem with running out of
memory. Is there any way I can find info? the test just hang at the
beginning on:
Running /sources/gcc-4.4.1/gcc/testsuite/gcc.c-torture/compile/compile.exp ...
And that's it.
Thanks,
R.

Yep, running top I can see at some point the Ram gets used almost entirely and the host starts to die. It's a Core 2 duo 2Gb of Ram. I thought it should be enough to install CLFS without trouble. Didn't even bother adding a Swap partition this time. Perhaps I should've done that?

Definitely worth a try ... I was reading a Gentoo forum, when I was using Gentoo. I used to use a RAM tmpfs for portage. And the remarks where that it would take upwards of 2-4 gigs, too compile GCC and GLIBC. So I think swapping with the hdd is the way to go. To be honest I would create a swap file versus a partition, just a preference.

As a side note ... Have you considered a package manager for your LFS build..?
I'm putting together a tutorial, just for this scenario. Its partiality done, but should be finished by tomorrow.
You can check it out here:

It was lack of Swap in the end (it seems, I keep my fingers crossed). I'm running the check with a Swapfile in the host and so far it goes for more than usual at the very least. I'm surprised that the testsuite itself won't tell you that it's running out of RAM and that you should swap.
As for package management, I have already a couple of CLFS systems at home and so far I have been successful with DESTDIR and keeping list of files and directories, I'm quite comfortably as it is... that's a hot topic, people have different taste
Thanks
P.
