gcc not found in chrooted user

when i try to use de "make" command to compile the man pages just after chrooting, it retrieves an error saying that it cannot find gcc, if i issue
Code:
ls /tools/bin
the gcc and cc symlink appear listed, but if i try to run /tools/bin/gcc it tells me gcc can not be found. In a not chrooted user everything works as it should. Does someone have any idea why this is happening, and how can i solve it?

thanks in advance

I don know what directories are in the $PATH because i'm not in the computer where i'm doing lfs, all i know is that i did stick to the book.
The only thing about gcc is that i used only one package which i downloaded from http://freshmeat.net/projects/gcc/, is it necessary to use the two packages (core and g++) as mentioned in the book?

no if you got the "all-in-one" tarball you have it all. try to chroot again and make sure your commands coincide directly with the book, it should pick up /tools/bin
