Error encountered in LFS v6.0 Ch. 4 .bash_profile

Can anyone help me? I loaded Red Hat Fedora on my system, then followed v. 6.0 of the LFS book up to Chapter 4.4, Setting up the Environment. When I set up the two profile files, I am unable to log into Fedora with the new userid I created for LFS. I've narrowed the problem down to the one line in .bash_profile,

exec env -i HOME=$HOME TERM=$TERM PS1='\u:\w\$ ' /bin/bash

When I try to log on with this line in .bash_profile, Fedora tells me that my logon lasted less than 10 seconds, along with some error about "X", and keeps me at the logon screen. I can actually logon in what I believe is Failsafe Mode, but that just gives me a small terminal window in the bottom right-hand corner.

Has anyone heard of this problem before? Should I just try to continue on through Chapter five and try to construct a temporary system from my little terminal window in Failsafe mode?

you could create a .xinitrc file and launch something from there, or launch it right out of the terminal ( e.g. "gnome-session" or " startkde")

What does the new userid have to do with your host? Thats on your LFS system. You need to set up GRUB to have an entry for LFS and then boot directly into LFS.... I'm confused... Nevermind... You are just starting.... Sorry, I just woke up...
