The Linux from Scratch website would be a very good starting point.

LFS is a great site. THe guys over there have written a hellva book. I would just use an LFS. I have heard of alot of people who are trying to create a linux distro for a specific purpose using LFS as the starting point.

I currently use LFS and got to admit it is awesome. Everything seems to run better and smooth. THe only downside is no package management. All I have is a text file now, but trying to get motived to write a util. to track software.

I got it working on my first try on a test system and then installl on my production system. It is not hard, but man it is time consuming as hell. Also, backing up is easy as well. Just have another OS and tar that dir up /mnt/lfs. Everything seems to install easier.

If you want to know what makes a distro, this is the ticket. LFS site has something really special over there. Good stuff....
