couple LFS questions
 

The all-in-one package isn't downloading.

The location the instructions give is ftp://ftp.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs-p...20121-1510.tar or http://ftp.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs-...20121-1510.tar

Neither one works.

Also, I'm reading the latest CVS instruction book, but the link to download the lfscommands only shows up to version 3.1. How do I know that those commands will match the packages that I'm downloading?

Your CVS is outdated. The new lfs-packages file is called lfs-packages-cvs-20020126-1836.tar

At this point don't use the online CVS version, we (me and two others) made a boatload of fixes to the book.They are in CVS but not online (the online CVS is just a nightly snapshot and is oudated until tomorrow when it's re-generated). yet another lfs-packages file is probably going to be uploaded later today.

I suggest download the book out of CVS and then render it to HTML using the instructions provided (see the README and INSTALL files)


For CVS, do not use lfs-commands files. The instructions therein are outdated for a bunch of packages. See the Changelog to find out exactly which packages have changed since the 3.1 release.

And no, we don't ever create lfs-commands files for CVS versions of the book. At the moment the lfs-commands have to be manually created which is a pain to do for every time we make a change to CVS. One of the outstanding bugs is to automate lfs-commands generation but it will be a while before we can get to it.

they are all nightly snapshots (except lfs-packages which is manually updated when necesary). They are still fairly recent but today a lot of changes have been commited to CVS (and more to come) which fix a number of problems. If you use CVS, you may as well get the latest stuff, or wait for tomorrow for a new snapshot if you don't want to download out of CVS and render the XML files into HTML yourself.

It depends on how brave you are. Sometimes CVS just isn't very stable if we're in the middle of making changes (sometimes it takes a day or so before everybody has commited their changes to make the book workable again). Usually we make sure that at no point CVS isn't usable but sometimes it's just unavoidable.

The current stable release is just that; a known stable release that'll get you an LFS system just fine. But there may be bugs in that version and they'll be fixed in future releases. So wait for a new stable release, or try a CVS. LFS-3.2 is scheduled to be released in about 2 weeks

What can I say. I work on what I believe in, LFS really is a passion for me. I have this thing "what the point is creating/maintaining something if you can't take the time to support and help people who use it".
