Question checkinstall cannot find installpkg

I have just finished setting up my bare LFS box and it boots up fine and everything works pretty well, which I'm quite proud of to say the least. What I would like to do now is have a method in place to manage my packages before I go any further. I probably should have done this in the beginning of Chapter 6, but I'll save that for a later date, when I decide to do it all again . So I downloaded the current pkgtools tgz from www.slackware.com, because I'm used to that (my host system is Slackware 9.1), and I unpacked it into /, so that the programs go into /bin, /sbin, etc. First off, was that the right thing to do? Then I installed checkinstall 1.5.3. Now I'm trying to install reiserfsprogs using checkinstall but it says that installpkg is not in my PATH. Checkinstall itself isn't even in my pkgtool list, but the program is there, in /usr/local/sbin. Also, echo $PATH reveals both /usr/local/bin and /usr/local/sbin, among other main paths, such as /sbin, where installpkg is installed. I don't know if there were any man pages for checkinstall, but I can't find them. I'm thinking that there must be some switch inthe checkinstallrc file that I need to include. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is that it
(for some reason) might not be executable?

Cheers,
Tink
