building LFS for SATA machine

I know it has to be possible, but the livecd does not boot. I have tried building under ubuntu 7.10, and there was an error I don't remember. I have also tried slackware 11 and 12 as the host system and at the part in "adjusting the toolchain" with the sed command, it cannot find the specs file, I touched a specs file where it was looking (probably not what I should have done), and it worked up until the expect test, where it segfaulted. So my question is: what is the ideal host system distro (if any) for building LFS on SATA drives?

I'm actually writing this from a SATA laptop I built with LFS. I built it from the LiveCD with no problems.

However, having said that, I have also tried building an LFS system in VMware Server with a SCSI interface, and found out that the Fusion MPT driver needed wasn't included on the LiveCD; I ended up using the IDE interface instead. Maybe yours is also not supported by the LiveCD? What SATA interface does your computer have?

lspci reports:

00:0f.0 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA VT6420 SATA RAID Controller (rev 80)
00:0f.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)

I can boot the x86 livecd, just not the x86_64 one. It hangs on "Loading"
