i finished lfs last night but i can't boot it.i think i screwed up something
in chapter 9 i issued this commnad:
grub-install /dev/sda
this command will erase the current grub settings
but i couldn't undrestand the next command "ln -sv /dev/sda2 /dev/root" and i just issued it, and i'm regret know cause in booting process i got this message when i select my lfs:
error: no kernel specified
error: unknown command '/boot/vmlinux-3.1-lfs'
i should say that my host disk is sda with three partitions:sda1,sda2 and sda5
and my lfs disk has just two partitions:sdb1 and sdb2
should i have installed the grub on /dev/hdb1?
i'm not familiar with grub 1.99.please help me!!!
The first question that comes to mind: Do (did) you need to set up grub (the second Warning Box in chapter 8.4)?
I'm asking because I do remember you mentioning that Debian is your host and if that is the case then grub is already installed and you need to add an entry to Debian's grub configuration. Is this going to be a dual boot system (Debian + LFS) or are you building LFS inside a virtual machine running on Debian?
If you _do_ need to install grub, can you post the following information:
- The output of ls -l /boot/
- The content of /boot/grub/grub.cfg
- The partition mount point(s) you created in chapter 2.3 to install LFS on (/dev/sdX and possibly /dev/sdY) and what is mounted on them.
- The content of /etc/fstab
BTW: Did you have to create the link (the ln -sv /dev/sda2 /dev/root command). It is only needed if grub-install fails (as stated in the LFS documentation).
that's the point.i screwed up grub and i can't boot it right now.is there anyway to fix it?
also i'm running it in vmware and when i inser my iso file to the dvd-rom ican't enter in rescue mode.i mean it doesn't boot with cd-rom and i checked the properties in bios setup

Ok, so I guess you are building LFS inside a VM and used a Debian iso as host.
Did you check to see if the cdrom is attached to the VM and set as primary bootable device (don't ask me how to do this in VMWare, I'm not familiar with it). A little search came up with this: ISO Image Files & VMware
Once you are able to boot the Debian DVD/CD, please post the information I asked for in my previous post (#2).
It looks like you've moved beyond this problem, since you have a more recent thread about something that looks related to this. Could you mark this as solved? Sorry if I'm wrong.
