Dbus-1.2.24 start-up gives the messages:
Starting the D-Bus Messagebus Daemon...
Failed to start message bus: Failed to bind socket "/var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket": No such file or directory

This occurs during boot and also if I start it manually using /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbus start

If I manually create the /var/run/dbus empty directory as root Dbus will start and stop manually until I reboot, with the system_bus_socket and dbus.pid files being created there as expected, then the /var/run/dbus directory disappears and the problem re-occurs. What is deleting it?

I inserted a mkdir /var/run/dbus into the /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbus script start section. Seems to function ok now.
