Well, despite what I said in my previous post, I didn't want to kludge. Kludging is what when does when one runs a distro that does things its way and you'd better conform or not, so you have to work around it.
But this is my own system compiled according to the LFS 8.1 book, darnit!
Having determined that I could not figure out the cause of the problem, it was time to try a different route. Because every package since GCC in chapter 6 was made into a package, it was easy to remove the DHCP package. Removing the lfs-bootscript related to starting DHCP at boot-time was a bit less easy, as there was not an uninstall command for those. Manual searching through the file system eventually sorted that.
Rebooted to make sure all was stable. At last, no error messages during boot-up. Yay.
At that point, as expected, my LFS 8.1 had no net access. But, there are *two* DHCP to choose from in the LFS book. So I compiled, packaged up and installed the other one: dhcpcd. Followed that with an install of the LFS bootscript for it, rebooted annnnnnd ... net without any problems.
