Best Host Distro to use
In everyone's opinion, what is the best Host Distro to use to start your LFS system? I have tried Redhat 7.2 and Mandrake 8.2 and have had problems with both. I have read through the forum and see where people fly right through their LFS setup without any problems (or very minor ones) and I am just wandering what distros are being used for the host.
I am running Mandrake 8.2 right now and I am having all sorts of problems getting GCC to compile and install. |
If your into LFS, then mabie you should give gentoo a shot. http://www.gentoo.org

Yes, i highly recommend Gentoo not as a host os, but as a MAIN one. Its easier than LFS and better IMO.

Gentoo is still very automated so you don't learn as much about what you are doing. That's why I like LFS it teaches you everything step by step. I saw there was another one which basically seems to do the same thing http://byolinux.org
I haven't tried it out yet though, but they seem to also walk you through the steps of installing everything from scratch. But you asked what host is best to use for an lfs install. It doesn't really matter which one you use as long as you have the basic necessary tools to get through the first few chapters. |
Yeah thats true, but gentoo is plenty of customization for me. Besides, since you build your own from scratch i think it would be much harder to get someone to help you with your problem since there is so many different combinations you can have..
just my 2 cents. |
I think we're getting a little off topic here, though.
I haven't tried an LFS yet (no time...moan, moan, whinge, whinge) but I would probably think that Slackware is a good bet for a host system. I'm not saying that Gentoo is not a great distro (I haven't tried that yet, either), but Slackware is a standard to which most other "tweak 'um" distros work, and that there's now a dedicated Slack forum (thanks Jeremy) should all help to make a pleasent LFS experience.
