base distro version?

I wonder if the version of the base distro will affect the success of lfs install? :Pengy: :newbie:

trickykid 09-02-2002 02:40 PM

In most cases it shouldn't affect it in anyway.

adam_boz 09-02-2002 08:00 PM

you basically just need the initial distro so you can use the tools (compiler, tar, ect). If you don't want to install a huge distro like redhat or others, there are some out there that are very basic and don't take up too much hard drive space (and install faster). good luck

p.s.- i can't think of any of the more bare-bones distributions, but check out "distributions" at www.linux.org

rverlander 09-02-2002 08:00 PM

It will, for example:

On RH7.3 I got heaps of errors
On RH6.2 I got no errors

re: base distro

I am having errors when compiling grep and glibc such as:

-lpcre error

pcre error

GNU C error

So I think that some distros with an equivalent version of gcc/grep/perl as lfs 3.3 might help. JUst a wild guess. :Pengy: :newbie:

adam_boz 09-02-2002 08:10 PM

I installed my lfs just fine with redhat 7.3 (i went through book 3.3, maybe rverlander was using an older book?)

adam_boz 09-02-2002 08:14 PM

Are you in chapter 6? i had some problems there too, because i hadn't done "make distclean", but running that from the source directory before compiling packages the second time ended the problem

trickykid 09-02-2002 08:38 PM

When I completed my LFS with I believe 3.1 or 3.2, I didn't run into any problems using Slackware 7.1. I did have to do a few workarounds since 7.1 was a bit older but I didn't run into many problems though.

re: distros version

I used redhat 7.1 and was stuck with the glibc/grep errors. So now I installed redhat 7.3. hopefully will have better luck. :Pengy: :newbie:

Anyone getting errors should use RH6.2

Now, it souned like some version may have some bugs. Anyway, stick to the one that worked. :newbie: :Pengy:

Whoa whoa, I suggest to keep this thread open, that a few of you go back and edit your posts to constructive critisisms/on topic ideas, and not personal attacks.

This would be a good topic to have here, and I would hope you guys would be so kind as to help to keep it open for use/discussion.

As for my input:

I built one on Mandy 8.0 and 8.2, with no problems. Slack 8.1 no problems. So I believe if you follow the book correctly, and do the minor adjustments for whatever distro you are using, you should be able to work around any problems building and LFS system.

Cool
