Anyone good with Gnome3?

I built CLFS 64-bit non-multilib and installed Gnome3, and when I try:

exec gnome-session
dbus-launch gnome-session

neither of them work, it just sits there on an empty prompt doing nothing
ive tried this in an xterm running in X without any window manager, and tried it in ~/.xinitrc

I have also tried running GDM the same way I tried running gnome-session

Any help would be appreciated

Install Mate instead. That's what I did.

What he said, Mate is gnome with a focus... Well as much focus as one can have working in the gnome api.

I'd like LXQT more if it didn't feel so unfinished. And the fact that QT is C++ is the major reason it isn't more successful. I see developer remarks all the time about how long it takes to build when they must do so 4 or 5 times a day due to in-house changes.

No, that's from Atergos. I suspect the menu was made with... I think it's Mozo, their (Mate's) menu editor. The icons are either Antergos or they pulled them from somewhere. I'm leaning towards these: https://github.com/madmaxms/iconpack-obsidian/

Lol. I'm one who does. I much prefer it over the old GNOME, so I haven't even bothered to try MATE. (Shrugs.)

I'm starting to regret the Mate decision. They're better than Gnome, but not by as much as I thought. One word: Appindicator.

The biggest issue with this trash heap that is the modern Gnome software stack is that there is so much old decrepit stuff that's not been updated or even released in a decade or more.

Why?

My guess is that the developers have had workstations, and images of them in place for years and continue to build their stack on it. The problem with that is, they link to old things, things so old they won't compile or sometimes even configure anymore. Yet, if you intend to use it, you've got to find out where it was made originally and try to patch that old piece of crap into shape so it will install.

I get so irritated with this. How can you call something "release" if it is based on broken libraries that aren't usable on a fresh install? Grrr!
