After 'make' of glibc, back to welcome screen

That's a bit worrying. If it's not the restart fairy, then it could be a hardware fault. Compiling, particularly something huge like glibc, puts a system under a lot of stress. It might have tripped a failsafe causing a reboot (although normally it halts a system). The xserver may have restarted which would bring you back to your login manager ("Welcome Screen"?).

In either case it is not normal behaviour. Delete the source and build dirs and start glibc again. See if you can reproduce this.
