Question xclock not running

Installed RHEL4 and able to run xclock when logged in as root.
Another user 'xxxx' who is the owner of oracle Apps is not running xclock command.
in fact, when I try to login as 'xxxx' on console, I get following message "(gnome-session:4871):Gtl.WARNING:**:cannot open display". I am unable to login at all.
DISPLAY is set for 'xxxx' as <hostname>:0.0.
If I create a new user with default parameters, I am able to run xclock.
Please guide (it seems there is some access rights / Path setup problem).

Thanks in advance.

Mumtaz

Sounds like a permissions issue with their .Xauthority file or the like. Try wiping those files associated with X in their home directory to start off with and restart X.

Sorry for being away from the link because of out of town.

I could not understand the solution. Can you please elaborate with possible commands as I am new to Linux.

Thanks in advance.

Whenever a user connects to another server there is a file called .Xauthority which is created in their home directory...you can view this file by running a command:

strings .Xauthority

Remove this file from the user's home directory when logged in as root and try and logout as root and login as the user again.

Does this happen for every new user you create?

Also try logging in to run level 3 as that problem user and tell us what you get..

Cheers
Arvind
