Enterprise:
An undertaking, especially one of some scope, complication, and risk.
To undertake an enterprise, or something hazardous or difficult.
Willingness or eagerness to engage in labor which requires boldness, promptness, energy, and like qualities; as, a man of great enterprise.
Willingness to undertake new ventures; initiative: “Through want of enterprise and faith men are where they are, buying and selling, and spending their lives like serfs” (Henry David Thoreau).

All that certainly sounds like Linux to me.

Jeremy,

Is it safe to assume you mean "for business use, rather than home use?" Sorry to be so
dense. You know I'm an American living in China and learning Chinese. This has
taught me not to assume anything ;-)

The forum is for issues related to running Linux in an enterprise environment as opposed to SOHO or home use.

Enterprises are generally considered to be businesses with actually offices and workers that come into the office every day. Often when software and/or hardware companies talk about enterprises, they mean businesses of slightly larger size.

When is an enterprise a corporation? i.e. one talks of "Coporate America" never, "Enterprise America".

In these cases, enterprise sounds small, and would seem to refer to SME's no large multinationals.

My solution is think of enterprise as a department of a large corporation. This means that enterprise is relevant to both SMEs and Corporates.

And, in general, enterprise is understood to be that, but with a more task and project based viewpoint.

In that sense, Microsoft has a Corporate image, while Linux pretty much sounds like _the_ enterprise OS due to it versatility.

I usually take it to mean a network server and multiple workstations dedicated to a specific set of tasks. It could be anything from a ten-person office to a monstrous corporate mainframe. While running a ten-person office may not involve real corporate solutions, it is very different from running a separate home or small office PC. I think this forum is good idea. If it takes off it may in fact attract a more diverse crowd to LQ.

Well that sounds really cool. Especially "specific". Doubtless, there will be very many of these. I'm sure there will be broad categories...

I just noticed linux.com touts itself as "the enterprise resource" ...

I'm waiting for an Enterprise OS with phasers.

It'll be cool to have a forum where we can think through work projects before implementing them.
