Using Wireless KeyBoard and Mouse with RHEL
 

I had posted the undermentioned thread on Hardware forum and no one seems to have experience with RHEL and Wireless KeyBoard and Mouse.

Are they supported in RHEL or not and has anyone installed RHEL using them? I do not want to get stuck with having to use a wired KB and mouse after installing RHEL with a wired KB and mouse.

For what it is worth I have used my logitech usb wireless mouse on several Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 servers, both ES and AS version (mostly on HP/Compaq DL380s but occasionally on 580s as well) without any difficulty.

I have not sprung for a wireless keyboards as of yet so I cannot speak knowledgably about that part of the question.

Hello again kmlinux12,

By now you must know I am following in all of your same footsteps. I wish I had read all of your messages prior to starting my RHEL installation process over a week ago. Remember I have a very similar Dimension 8400 as you and it has the Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Desktop.

Last night I was able to install a dual boot Windows XP / RHEL. Ok great and the install went completely smoothly until my first boot after install.

After its first boot I was unable to use the keyboard or mouse. It times out on the login and does not offer any kind of troubleshooting at that point. Again both keyboard and mouse are completely unrecognized. Have you had any help finding a solution? Let me know and I will do the same.

when you popped in the first rhel cd and it started the install did it lock up with a wirelsss kb and mouse or were you able to install with a wirelss kb and mouse?

I successfully installed RHEL without any trouble at all, no lock ups, no error messages. From Disk 1 through Disk 4 I used the wireless keyboard and mouse. It was not until I completed the installation and booted the computer for the first time. GRUB started, I chose Red Hat, Red Hat displayed loading scripts with green [Ok] messages to the right...then about 20 - 25 scripts in it prompted me to select a Yes or No option and the keyboard and mouse were already dead... then boot proceeded further to a login, screen flickered a few times while showing a password prompt, asked for a password, I could not type it in and then process timed out. That's it.

Since I have not installed RHEL yet I canot say for sure what will happen in my case but from your comments it seems something similar will happen. I suggest you contact RHEL and get an official answer from them and post on this site also for everyone's reference. I however cannot imagine an enterprise level OS not supporting wirelsss KB and mouse so I think there must be a way.

By the way just to be safe I have a wired KB and mouse as well but would hate it if thats what I have to use regularly if RHEL does not support wireless KB and mouse.

I have RHEL 3 now up and running on the Dell Dimension 8400 using a serial (wired) keyboard and mouse. This is the only way I could complete the final steps to the installation like setting a login and password for the Admin in X Windows and a few other configuration settings. Incidentally while in RHEL I attempted to change the settings for keyboard and mouse to the original wireless USB settings and I found there are none available. I wonder if while running RHEL if I surf the web to redhat.com and attempt to update drivers from there whether or not I will be successful. I will let you know.

I would like to have the wireless keyboard and mouse working eventually for now I am pleasantly amused. Don’t worry I plan on posting a complete account of how I installed and configured everything once this adventure is over.

kmlinux12 I do not know how to contact Redhat for support by email or phone. I have not subscribed to any of their support programs because I do not think I am eligible. You see I have an academic version of RHEL. If you have an email or phone number for Redhat then please pass it along. I will contact them straight away.

The phone is for RHEL sales. I also have an academic version so am in the same boat. Basically you have to try your luck and try to avoid saying you have an academic verison if possible althgouh it may be hard. Once they know you have an academic version they do not want to provide support but some reps are helpful and this is a simple question so may be able to answer it or point you to a driver downlaod section for wireless.

I had issues with downloading the actual software so was able to speak to them and get answers but yes its very limited with academic verison.

Hi kmlinux12,

No word back from Redhat yet. However the wireless keyboard and mouse is now working properly after I reinstalled RHEL3, and unfortunately I cannot explain why. Once I have some free time I am going to post an open "How to" doc on this subject. What I think has something to do with it is...when I reinstalled RHEL3 I had both a PS/2 keyboard and mouse and the wireless USB keyboard and mouse connected to the box. Redhat recognized both sets of input devices. When I finished the reinstall I unplugged the PS/2 devices and then when Redhat rebooted it wanted to change the hardware configuration and I choose to ignore the change.

Next I have to have Redhat recognize the Broadcom Network Card that came with the new computer. Currently I am unable to connect to the internet because Redhat does not recognize the card. Could having a Linksys router connected to the internet before this Network Card be the problem? I am going to try the same technique of unplugging the cable from the Network Card to see if Redhat sees a hardware change.

Incidentally, I have not been reading these message boards as frequently as before, so please send me a direct email if you think it would be faster.
