Hi

Its not possible to upgrade from 4.x to 5.0.
You will a fresh installation and there any many technology differences between 4.x to 6.x.
Make sure you have a backup of course!!!

You can upgrade from RHEL4 to RHEL5 and then from RHEL5 to RHEL 6. The problem is that if you have a support subscription with RedHat they do not support whole number upgrades. First things first.

1) boot to a RHEL5 dvd
2) when the boot menu comes up type the following at the command prompt: linux upgradeany
3) this will take you through the upgrade process.
4) fully harden the new RHEL5 OS
5) Download the latest RHEL6.2 iso and boot from it
6) This time, at the menu press the esc key to get to a boot prompt
7) Again, type in linux upgradeany
8) This should take you through the upgrade process again.

Some caveats!!!
I use RHN Satellite and have had some issues with registering RHEL6 boxes that were previously RHEL5 boxes. I have also had some RHEL5 -> RHEL6 upgrades fail (but I think this was due to older isos, so that may not matter).

Similar to the question you asked before:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...-2-1-a-644652/

You were told then that doing a fresh install was better, and that RHEL5 was the latest, but you apparently loaded 4 instead. If you're using Red Hat Enterprise, you should call Red Hat support, since that's one of the things you're paying for. They can guide you through an upgrade path, tell you what's possible/what's not.
