Terminal Window in Linux

Hi,

I'm using Linux Red Hat Enterprise Edition. I dont know the version im using. A consultant has installed Oracle Financials 11.5.10.2 on it with Linux as OS. Now to work on the Oracle Financials ERP, I need to activate some settings in Linux.

However, im unable to open the terminal. I tried through all the 3 ways namely : (a) Right Click mouse, New Terminal, Go to System tools, Terminal and entering text "gnome-terminal" in the Run Program window.

As soon i do any of the above actions, the terminal window is displayed and it immediately disappears.

Can anybody please help me in this regards
Thanks
Srikanth Rama

any chance the hostname of the machine was changed while it was up and running? if so, gnome apps might fail when trying to initiate through X.
