Telnet on RHEL 4

Hi All,

I wonder if someone out thre can help. I am currently setting up a HP DL360 G4. I am having problems being able to telnet into the server. I can telnet out of the server to other machines but I cannot gain access to it. I have setup the routing tables and I can SSH into the machine. The machine has telnet installed and I just cannot get the usual telnet prompt to appear when connecting to it.

I know you're probably going to say well you can SSH into it what do you need telnet for? It's something that we need running on the machine.

your help will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Neil

sounds like the telnet service just plain isn't running. can you telnet to it locally? Due to the fact that telnet is shitty, it's normally disabled by default, even once installed. check /etc/xinetd.d/telnetd (or similar) to see if it's explicitly disabled.

Hi Chris,

I have enabled the telnet client already and when I try to connect to say local host using 127.0.0.1 I get the message
[ All network ports in use ]
[ pty_slave ]

If this gives anyone any clues as I'm stumped

Cheers

Neil
