Suse Linux 9.3 Professional and IMAP server problem

Hi,

I am new to Suse linux. Mostly use Redhat. I am trying to setup a mail server on Suse Linux 9.3 Professional on Intel. Everything is perfect, i am using sendmail for handling mail and it works perfectly. The only problem is IMAP/POP3 access. I am unable to login to imap/pop3 via outlook from a xp machine. I tried from multiple machines, it ask for password and then reject login. Do you guys know if there is anything i need to set in configuration to enable imap login for users. I can read and write mail if i use pine on server itself. But it gives problem with remote logins with imap/pop. i tried both secure and normal imap/pop3 and all both ways give problem. I don't really secure imap/pop3 since i will use a webmail application on same server which need imap server to work. So it secure does'nt really matter. Please note that i tried qpop3 service for pop3 on same server and through that i can login to pop3. But i need imap and the pop3/imap with the imap package is not working. I will really appreciate if anyone could give any suggestions.

sendmail can be difficult to configure; make sure that you are compiling the configuration files and reloading sendmail each time you make a change.

Personally, I would consider using qmail, which is much easier to configure and also supports IMAP.

I am comfortable with configuring sendmail because i am using it for last 3/4 years as our mail handler and as i said earlier sendmail is working perfectly. That is it can get emails fine and i can read and send emails using pine from ssh. The imapd is not working for me, it ask for password but then reject loggin, same happen with ipop3d which ask for password if try to connect from outlook but then reject login. On other hand if i use Qpopper for pop3 it accept login and let me download all emails. I really need imap for my webmail system, any suggestion why imap and ipop3d is not accepting login connections. I am sure imap/ipop3d server is running but for some reason its not letting me in from outlook from windows client. I even tried connecting from evolution mail client on suse machine and it does not work either. I know its something simple but unable to find help online.

Did you look in the logs on the server?

And I would really recommend another IMAP server, I'm betting that 'imapd' is wu-imapd which only supports mbox for mail store and mbox sucks pretty bad. Courier, Dovecot, etc are pretty easy to setup and support Maildir. Cyrus is really nice but doesn't support Maildir (it has it's own storage scheme) and is a bit of a PITA to setup.
