Question Software RAID in Red Hat Linux Enterprise 4

I am pretty new to Linux world and trying to get a taste of it...
Can somebody please explain me about Software RAID used in Enterprise Linux?

I know Hardware RAID is created by comibing two or more hard disks together...

But what about Software RAID.. what could be benefit of creating Software RAID?

Thanks for any input!

Not to sound flippant, but software RAID is just like RAID without the hardware(controller).
Advantages are allegedly cost, according to RH.

If you have a hardware RAID I would suggest using the hardware RAID. However if you are on a system that does not have a hardware RAID, then the software RAID can be used without spending any addition money. We have also used software RAID to mirror between two different SAN devices.
