Software, NEC Storage Manger & Java install and config for RHEL 4.8

Hello,
First post, not a strong linux user. Using RHEL release 4 update 8, I'm trying to install and configure NEC Storage Manager to monitor a D10 Raid via LAN. The software installs iSMsvr and associated programs that communicate with the raid and display a java web GUI via localhost:8070. Their system requires java 1.4.2 and ships with build 13, however I have done a firmware upgrade since installation. I'm using Firefox 3.0.12. I've engaged NEC support to confirm I'm using the correct version of java. Their firmware upgrade doc didn't mention upgrading java and the Windows monitor still worked with the same version of java so, I'm assuming the version is still ok.

Is anyone familiar with this software package? Failing that, is anyone familiar with java plugins for Firefox 3.0.12?

I've followed the install doc for the iSM software and I'm pretty sure I've got that correct. It's pretty straight forward, install packages and set basic parms in conf file. If I have java plugin disabled (or not installed) and load localhost:8070 I get prompted for the missing plugin and the normal pop up when I close the page appears. I've tried build 13 and build 18 (using many helpful posts on this site) with their respective plugins enabled but both produce the same effect, when I load localhost:8070 the browser crashes.

This is probably something only NEC support can help with but, I thought I'd use this as my first post while I'm waiting on them. Questions? Recommendations?

Ok, so your problem is that Firefox crashes when you load localhost:8070 ?

Try updating the packaged firefox (up2date firefox). Try downloading Firefox (not via the package manager), installing it (to /usr/local or whatever) and using that version.

Sorry, I should have mentioned, I'm in a production environment that requires that I keep using the same version of Firefox. Turns out I heard back from NEC late yesterday. Their web client uses active x controls so it will not work on any platform except windows. I'm not sure if that means I should give up. I'd like to find a way to make it work but, that may be impossible.
