Rename LVM volumes on RedHat 7.1 Enterprise

I am running Red Hat 7.1 Enterprise with using a LVM volume for the setup. This is /etc/fstab.
/dev/mapper/rhel_linux234-root / xfs defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-path/ccw-0.0.1571-part1 /boot xfs defaults 0 0
/dev/mapper/rhel_linux234-swap swap swap defaults 0 0
I want to rename the LVM volume name.
I issue:
dmsetup rename rhel_linux234-root system-root
dmsetup rename rhel_linux234-swap system-swap
vgrename rhel_linux234 system
update /etc/fstab
mkinitrd /boot/initramfs-3.10.0-229.el7.s390x.img 3.10.0-229.el7.s390x
zipl -V
The IPL stalls with no /error messages.
Anyone with some advice

Hopefully you have that minidisk linked to another system whilst doing this. Doing it on a running guest isn't likely to work.

Very little current z/VM experience here - try the linux-390 list.

Thank you for the reply. What and where is the linux-390 list.
The commands actually do execute on a running system and I am able to reboot but fails to IPL successfully.
I thought about mounting to another system but I am wondering if something else needs to be executed.
