post installtion of linux problem

I completed red hat linux installation, and I have rebooted it, then I was asked for username and password. I am trying to give the user name, immediately it will asks for the password before entering the username completely, finally I am unable to give the username and password. Even I have tried using the root password still authentication fails.

My guess would be something has gone wrong during the installation, and I'd be reinstalling in case something else happened as well
