Question Oracle 9i + Linux AS 4.0 (64bit) + HP Itanium Based Server

Hi,

We are proposing to install Oracle 9i on 64 bit Redhat Linux Enterprise version, Advance Server (AS) 4.0. The hardware is HP itanium Server.

Now the equation is like this:

Oracle 9i + RedHat Linux AS 4.0 (64 bit) + HP Itanium Server.

We would like to know about the following:
1. Any stability issues in future in the above combination of software and hardware.
2. Any performance issues if Oracle 9i runs on 64bit Linux specifically on a HP itanium based server.
3. Any memory constraints in using above combination of software and hardware.
3. Any known pitfals using the above combo on HP Itanium based server from database point of view.

The database size is roughly 500 GB.

Thanks.

Funny enough, we're about to do the same implementation, only on PowerEdge 2850's.

This is what i've been told by someone who speaks to Oracle executives on a regular basis.

1. RedHat has been given 12 reported kernel bugs and HAS NOT fixed them. SLES 9 SP2 has apparently been MUCH more responsive about these issues.
2. I don't know much about HP, what SAN hardware are you using? Don't use QLogic, use Emulex HBA's.
3. From what I've been told, with 9i, migrating from 32 to 64 bit enables you to use an 8 GB SGA size instead of the max 3GB with 32 bit Linux. I'm not a DBA so i'm not sure that this is accurate, or that I remembed this correctly.
4. Again, not too familiar with HP, but if you'll post up your complete SAN architecture, we can go through the whole thing. For something like this you really should consider the storage as much as the hardware/OS, especially for a database this size.
