Need Help on SAN & NAS

Hi
I have one server installed Redhat Enterprise Linux ES Release 4 (Nahant Update 7).
The kernel version is 2.6.9-55.0.6.ELsmp. The server is connected to EMC Clarion 600. We are using EMC powerpath is multipath solution.
First of all I do not have any experience on SAN and NAS.
One of the file systems on the server is out of space. We want increase that, our SAN department wants increase the LUN on the storage.
How should we have to do that on Linux?
What are things we need consider?
How should we know that lun is created?
What are commands?
Thanks,

A few things.

First, is your current partition that you want to expand using lvm? If it is not you really can not grow a partition.
Second, is the fedora server on a VM? It is not a big difference but the steps to make the LUN show up can be different.

Let us know and we should be able to walk you through it.

Thanks,

What I understood from the details is that you have a server A which is directly connected to the EMC SAN via two HBA cards. The LUNs from EMC frame are multi-path (via two HBAs) and you are using emcpower software to mount these as filesystems.

If EMC team decides to increase the LUN then you will have to do the following:-

1. Take a complete backup of the filesystem, lets say /dev/emcpowera filesystem.
2. unmount the filesystem associated with emcpowera device.
3. comment the entry emcpowera in /etc/fstab.
4. Have the SAN team extend the LUN.
5. Now the older partition table on emcpowera will have to be updated.
6. Reboot the server to make OS understand that the LUN has been increased.
7. Once the server is up, you will have to re-create the partition table and then mkfs and restore.

The problem is that you don't have the volume manager hence you cannot extend the filesystem online.

Best Regards,
Rahul Khare.

If possible, I would just have your SAN Admin show you a new LUN, migrate the data, then give the old one back. This is assuming they have enough space to give
