Need advice on Backup solution
 

Hi,

I would appreciate advice on a backup solution running on Linux. The solution needs to:

1. Be free or very very affordable. We just can't spend $10K on a Veritas solution -- though I'd love to be able to.

2. Run on RH9

3. Live in a predominantly Windows environment

4. Be able to back up both Windows and Linux platforms

5. Would be super nice if it could also back up MS Exchange and MS SQL Server.

6. Be compatible w/ tape backup libraries i.e. ExaByte

I'd very much appreciate your advice on this.

well, that's nice and vague... i like that you try and explain what you need it to do, but my answer could be:

1) share the sections of win network needing backup
-or-
1) open up a dump sector to catch stuff from network needing to be backed up

2) write shell scripts which can locate / archive data for backup

3) put a wrapper around your scripts, which will perform all the necessary tasks, and put that entry in the crontab


--cheap as free, less labor / hardware (tape/whatever)

Thanks for the response though I'm a little lost by what you're saying. What to back up on the Windows network? Files, files and more files.

No application data or anything. Just files. That's why in item #5, I talked specifically about what kind of special data I have that needs special treatment i.e. MS Exchange and MS SQL Server.

I'm not sure what part of my post was vague but hopefully this follow up will make it clear.

I'm trying to find out if there are Linux based backup applications/solutions that I can use -- out of the box -- to back up my network. Of course, they have to be affordable or ... I can't afford them.

Did you go to Freshmeat.net? I think you will find exactly what you are looking for there. My personal favorite is Konserve but it does not do everything you require.
