I need a newbie resource to learn centos 5 installation and setup as a home business file server. In the future we will expand its functions, but for now just file serving.
You can do a minimal server install by choosing to customise the installed packages from the graphical install, and unchecking all the packages. But you will be left with a command line environment only - is that what you want ?
Otherwise just select one desktop environment and what ever fileserving software you want under Servers in the package chooser. http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5....tion-group-x86
I suggest you leave everything else as default, especially the partitioning and boot set up.

No, I have no Linux experience with the power-using command line interface. I need a GUI interface until I am comfortable in the (BASH) shell. Your link is greatly appreciated.

It sounds as if the file server part will take up more of your time than the install; in that case, what you are most likely to need concerns Linux networking and file serving. The link to 'linuxhomenetworking' in post #4 covers all of this (and more).

Thank you,

The only way to get comfortable on the command line is to just jump right in...
