Is ISCSI a protocol for SAN devices

I have this doubt that is ISCSI a protocol for communication for SAN devices? I mean, is this protocol used for transmitting data from the client to the SAN devices.

I hope my question is clear.

Please revert with the reply to my query.

Regards

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISCSI

Basically:

A SAN / NAS device may expose a volume as an ISCSI "Target", the client will connect to this target and the volume appears to the client as a disk.
