Installing an rpm on Enterprise Linux 4

Hello,

As part of Oracle installation on REL4, I'm required to install some prerequisite rpm files on Linux.
I tried installing them as follows:

rpm -ivh libaio-3.0.96-3.src.rpm
cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
rpmbuild --target i686 libaio.spec
cd ../RPMS/i386
rpm -ivh libaio-0.3.96-3.i386.rpm libaio-devel-0.3.96-3.i386.rpm

However, still when I check the package it appears as not installed!

Please let me know how can I install such package?

Why are you installing libaio for RHEL3 on RHEL4??? Use the libaio rpms from RHEL4 they are on the installation media. You might benefit from this CentOS forum also;

CentOS is a 100% binary compatible 'clone' of RHEL BTW.

Well, it's not a matter of why I'm doing this. What I want is that this package must be installed. And I'm not familiar with any way of installing rpms. Even if these are available in the media, I don't know how to install them from there!?

Well you installed the rpm packages you built;

rpm -ivh libaio-0.3.96-3.i386.rpm libaio-devel-0.3.96-3.i386.rpm

To check use; rpm -qa 'libaio*'

To install the newer packages from the media use; rpm -Uvh <the rest here>

Please read from the console or xterm session for the details; man rpm
