Help merging users from old RH7 to new RH9

We have a RH 7.3 machine that we want to move everything to a different machine with RH 9. We can move all the files over but can not move the user accounts. When we attempt to move to user accounts we get a file manipulation error. We have done this with RH 7.3 to another RH 7.3 machine before. Is there a reason that this does not work going to RH 9? Is there something we need to be doing?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide
George

The password format changed from 7.x. I think it went from DES to MD5. There should be some import modules available.

Well I did a ton of checking on Google, and everything seems to indicate that you should be able to simply tar the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow from the first box to the second. There doesn't appear to be any type of data migration necessary.

What means were you using to copy the files?

We just used a cp to copy the files. We are going to try to tar the files and see if that works. Why would tar be any different the cp though?

Thanks for your help and your time.
